The Gavel Club explained…
Imagine a group of young people being trained in public speaking skills in a Christian setting. Basically that is what the Gavel Club is. Gavel club is a part of Toastmasters International. There are certain age requirements to be involved with Toastmasters, but Gavel Clubs fit the needs of everyone else who can not attend Toastmaster meetings. Will and I have been involved with Toastmasters clubs for about eight years. He has been club president, VP of education and an a

The unwritten rules about homeschooling.. more than you ever wanted to know!
Since my last post hinted at one of the fundamental unwritten rules about homeschooling and its unique culture, I thought I would give the rest of them, since they are never discussed openly amongst veterans. 1) During the fall semester, the house is not thoroughly cleaned until Thanksgiving week. We are convinced that having “basic sanitation” is necessary for the first couple of weeks until midterms, then a slow vortex of grunge, paper, dirty laundry and the like starts to

Those Amazing kids of ours..
I am sitting in the midst of giants, and so are you, if you are a parent. These children we are trying to bring up in the nurture and admonition in the Lord, are amazing. This group of young people that I am working with in the “Young Writers Guild” are no older than 14; and yet, they are fully adult in so many ways. Their talents amaze me. They are writing books, editing each other’s manuscripts, seeking out publishing companies, and learning about the book writing world–

I totally ate that frog–today!
You’ve heard of that expression: eat that frog?? It was coined by someone who was trying to get us over our procrastination issues. Well, I have been procrastinating–big time–on ordering school books. I was just plain AFRAID of what the total number might be. So, today, I armed myself with a cup of coffee and list of phone numbers. I started calling the moms I knew who had kids older than mine to see if I could buy, borrow, rent, steal? any of their school books. And do y

Interview with Mom: about words
Me: So, Mom, you seem to have such an appreciation for words. You use such colorful imagery just in normal speech, what do you think of when you think of words?? Mom: Words are tools for creativity. Words are tools for unlocking images. It’s our common base for understanding between people, between cultures, between friends. Me: You grew up with all the regular words plus a few made up words. Can you tell us about your favorite “family words”? Mom: Some families will comb

What Homeschool is looking like for the 09-10 year
It’s finally mid July, and all of the homeschooling mommies who have been hibernating need to start waking up now and admit that another year is soon upon us. Well, this is the first of many “finish lines” that we are going to cross in this big journey of homeschooling. We have only one year left in which to school this guy. Our oldest, James, will be starting his senior year in highschool. What his academics looks like: Classes at Hallstrom: English: Literary Lessons from L

Advice for Homeschoolers on: teaching writing
Since I homeschool and teach a gaggle of homeschooled students, I feel somewhat burdened to help parents with this daunting chore of teaching writing. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to be an English teacher or an accomplished writer to actually teach writing, but it DOES help. Although sometimes knowing a lot about writing, gets in the way. Let me explain. Most people who write blogs, actually DO write well. Let’s face it. You can not hide your inability to

Homeschool Year Complete! Tackle it Tuesday(s)
Is homeschooling “housework”?? Well, a lot of it is done at home, and it is work, so I think it qualifies for a Tackle it Tuesday. Every Tuesday for the entire school year, we’ve been participating in a highly academic based Christian co-op. I teach a class called “Write your Own Book” for 4th-6th graders. It was so much fun teaching the class. I had a chance to draw out quite a bit of pent-up creativity. Here’s my class (minus one student who was absent the day I took t
